The National Weather Service has issued a special weather alert about a band of snow that's currently moving through much of East Idaho.

The band arrived late Saturday morning and is forecast to not exit the region until early Saturday evening.

The areas receiving snow from the band include Pocatello, Chubbuck, Idaho Falls, Ammon, Blackfoot, Rigby, Ririe Reservoir, Chesterfield Reservoir, Firth, Shelley, Iona, Ucon, Menan, Ririe, Roberts, Lewisville, Pingree and Fort Hall.

Some places in the Idaho Falls area are expected to receive as much as five inches of snow while the Pocatello, Chubbuck and Blackfoot areas are looking at an inch or two at the most.

The snow is causing hazardous driving conditions on local roads, especially Interstate 15 and Highways 20 and 26.

"Consider delaying travel if you will be going through this band of heavy snow," the weather service stated. "Visibilities are below one half mile in this band of heavy snow, in part due to wind gusts of 20 to 35 mph. If you are driving, slow down and be on alert for other motorists. Low visibility shortens the amount of time you have to react to situations. Conditions can deteriorate rapidly in winter weather situations. Be prepared for snow or ice covered roads. Slow down and allow extra time when traveling."

Light snow is in the forecast throughout the weekend for East Idaho so it's likely some flurries will fall Saturday night through Sunday, though accumulations are expected to be less than an inch in most places.
