BLACKFOOT — Police Chief Kurt Asmus said that a suspect wanted in connection to an armed robbery in Idaho Falls was taken into custody in Blackfoot following a brief stand-off and a strong show of force Saturday evening. Asmus said 23-year-old Alejandro Loya was arrested at a residence on Apple Street in Blackfoot where officers had located a vehicle, wanted in connection to an armed robbery at Video Mexico in Idaho Falls on Friday. A second suspect, Alberto L. Nunez, was also arrested in Idaho Falls Saturday in connection to the robbery. Nunez is charged with two counts of felony robbery and use of a weapon in the commission of a felony and Loya is charged with felony accessory to robbery. According to Idaho Falls police reports, Nunez entered Video Mexico at 1338 Lincoln Road, and threatened an employee and a customer with a gun. Nunez allegedly took money and jewelry from the store, and stole cash from the customer. Nunez left the store on foot before being picked up by Loya, driving a 2004 white Duramax truck, in the 1000 block of East Lincoln Road. Asmus said when the white truck was located in Blackfoot, a search warrant was issued and the regional STAR team was called out to serve it. “We knew that we had the vehicle, but we didn’t know if both suspects were in the residence,” Asmus said. “It was an armed robbery, we wanted to be cautious.” Loya refused to come out of the house, but the special tactics team accessed the residence and Loya was arrested without incident. Asmus said no weapons were recovered at the scene, but Idaho Falls reported Monday that items stolen from Video Mexico were located at the Blackfoot residence during the search. As the investigation continued, detectives identified Nunez as the suspect in the robbery and he was contacted at his Idaho Falls residence and arrested. The arrests were the result of a joint investigation by the Idaho Falls Police Department, and the Blackfoot Bingham County Joint Detectives team, Asmus said.
