POCATELLO — Breeds of horses long beloved by many royal families danced, jumped and showed off their best tricks recently at the Bannock County Event Center, during a show called the Gala of the Royal Horses. 

"You get to see all different breeds, so for a few minutes you get to go to Spain, then you go to Vienna, then we have Roman riding," said Rene Gasser, co-owner and head horse trainer.

The show began in 2000 in Australia and is performed throughout the world. It highlights trained horses that can perform war jumps and dance with music.

For the past five years, they've performed in the U.S. and traveled across the country.

Co-owner Barbara Gasser said they've gotten a positive reception throughout the country and they get many repeat customers.

"It's entertainment with horses suitable for the whole family," she said.

The show features Friesian horses from Holland, Andalusian horses from Spain, and Lipizzan stallions from Vienna. The show also has quarter horses and Arabian horses.

While the Andalusian dances softly to the music, the Lipizzan stallion shows off moves once used in historic battles. 

The trainers work six days a week at a minimum with the horses.

The effort begins at 7:30 a.m. and can stretch to 6 p.m. After that, they'll often put on a performance the same night.

"It's longer days, but that's what it takes. It takes a lot of time and care so the animals look magnificent," Barbara Gasser said.

Rene Gasser says that the show is beautiful enough that he's seen it bring people to tears.

"There's a lot of history behind every breed of horse. You'll see some of the most beautiful horses and breeds in the world," Barbara Gasser said. "It's attractive because there are not many shows like this in the world that carry so many breeds of horses."

Rene Gasser says that if you like horses, the show is a "must-see."

"There are all these sorts of different aspects that people don't expect to see, and they walk away being quite happy about it," he said. "It's hard to explain until you see the show."

He said Gala of the Royal Horses will return to Pocatello in two to three years.
