A 63-year-old Rexburg woman has been sentenced in the Nov. 29, 2021 death of a Brigham Young University-Idaho student, Briggs Kline. He was crossing at Seventh South and Center Street when he was killed.

Kline succumbed to his injuries Dec. 2, 2021.

Ruth Del Carmen Bedolla pleaded guilty to misdemeanor reckless driving earlier this month. Seventh District Court Judge David Hunt sentenced her to 180 days in jail with 100 of those days suspended. She was also ordered to relinquish her driver’s license, to serve two years probation and to provide 50 hours of community service.

According to police reports Bedolla told officers that when she was driving, she did see pedestrian placards flashing and slowed down.

“(Bedolla) indicated she looked for pedestrians and did not see any, so she continued driving when her vehicle hit Kline,” wrote officers.

Police noted that at the time, three other vehicles had stopped to let Kline cross the street.

“All three drivers provided statements to law enforcement that they saw Kline walking in the crosswalk with flashing crosswalk placards when he was hit by Bedolla’s vehicle.”

Bedolla surrendered to the Madison County Jail on April 18.
