POCATELLO — Several Pocatello police officers responded to Portneuf Medical Center on Sunday afternoon after a 911 caller made authorities believe an armed individual was headed to the hospital with plans to shoot people.

A police investigation revealed about an hour later that there was no threat. The bogus 911 call had come from a man who had recently moved to Pocatello and was suffering from mental health issues, police said.

But it all resulted in a great deal of stress at PMC as Pocatello police and hospital security personnel guarded all entrances and patrolled the hospital and its grounds.

The incident began to unfold around 2 p.m. Sunday when the Pocatello Police Department received a 911 call from the man saying a female was headed to PMC with a gun with plans to kill people, authorities said.

Pocatello police simultaneously responded to the hospital and began searching for the man who made the call.

While PMC was secured, police officers found the man in the area of an apartment complex on South Fourth Avenue around 3 p.m. Sunday.

Police quickly determined he was suffering from mental health issues and there was no threat to PMC.

The man’s family was contacted and they apologized for his actions and took custody of him, police said.

Authorities said the investigation into the incident is ongoing and police might cite the man for making the bogus 911 call.
