IDAHO FALLS — Police arrested a local man Dec. 21 on eight charges stemming from his alleged battery of a male roommate.

Joel Antonio Zarraga, 41, faces four felonies and four misdemeanors. The felonies include aggravated battery, second-degree kidnapping, robbery and destruction of evidence.

The misdemeanors include resisting and obstructing an officer, malicious injury to property, possessing a fraudulent identification card and making a false 911 call.

Police responded to a residence on the 2200 block of Croft Drive just after midnight on Dec. 21. According to the police affidavit, multiple area residents heard a male screaming for help.

Police found a shirtless man, later identified as the victim, standing in the roadway.

“Look what he did to me,” the 43-year-old victim said as he showed officers a large contusion on his left triceps.

The victim told officers his roommate Zarraga had allegedly battered him moments prior to their arrival.

According to the victim, Zarraga had been consuming alcohol and the victim activated a Go Pro camera to document what was happening.

At some point during their altercation, Zarraga allegedly mounted the victim’s back, placed him in a chokehold and wrapped his legs around him to prevent him from escaping, according to court records. The victim had a laceration on his neck and contusions consistent with strangulation.

Officers received permission from the victim to enter the residence, according to the affidavit. Zarraga allegedly failed to comply with commands that he was under arrest and to exit with his hands visible. It was at this time that Zarraga allegedly texted 911 and advised he was having an emergency.

Police later obtained a warrant to enter the curtilage of Zarraga’s space in order to apprehend him and place him into custody. The curtilage is the area immediately surrounding a home, like a porch or fenced yard.

While Zarraga was being processed in the Bonneville County Jail, he allegedly was found to be in possession of a fraudulent identification card with the name “Ivan,” according to court records.

According to the criminal complaint, Zarraga faces 15 years imprisonment, a $50,000 fine and restitution for aggravated battery and 25 years imprisonment, a $50,000 fine and restitution for second-degree kidnapping.

The robbery charge is punishable by life in prison, a $50,000 fine and restitution. Destruction of evidence for allegedly destroying the camera carries a maximum five-year sentence, $10,000 fine and restitution.

The four misdemeanors each carry the same maximum sentence of one year in jail and $1,000 fine.

Zarraga remains in custody with a bond set at $40,000, according to court records.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday before Magistrate Judge John C. Dewey at the Bonneville County Courthouse in Idaho Falls.
