A helicopter crashed on the ice at Ririe Reservoir Thursday afternoon, killing one and injuring another, according to a press release from the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office

According to the release, the downed aircraft was more than a mile east of the dam with two occupants. First responders deployed on snow machines from the Juniper Campground area.

The release states one occupant was deceased at the scene and the other occupant was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Bonneville County Coroner Shante Sanchez identified the deceased individual as 59-year-old Bradford Brown of Alpine, Utah.

Brown was the CEO and founder of ATL Technology, and he was a board member of BioUtah. According to the BioUtah website, he graduated from BYU with a degree in mechanical engineering. He started ATL Technology in 1993 with the first biotech project in 2001. The website says Brown was a private pilot flying both helicopter and airplanes with over 4,200 hours of flight time.

According to the sheriff’s office press release, there was a downed power line in the area.

After the occupants were removed from the ice, deputies secured the area for continued investigation and notified the Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board.

Rescue personnel and resources included the Idaho Falls Fire Department, Jefferson Central Fire District, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Idaho Fish and Game, Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue, Dive Rescue and Drone teams and Bonneville County Coroner’s Office.

Deputies have closed Ririe Reservoir and the area around the crash site for safety due to downed power lines and unstable ice conditions.

“The circumstances of why the helicopter was in that area are still being confirmed and the investigation is continuing,” the press release states.
