SHELLEY — A man wanted on a felony warrant and his adult female passenger both died in a crash after he drove the wrong way with headlights off on Interstate 15 late Saturday night while being pursued by Bingham County sheriff’s deputies, authorities said.

The crash came after a sheriff’s deputy used a PIT maneuver to end the high-speed chase, causing the man’s vehicle to leave the freeway and overturn. The names of the deceased have not yet been released.

The incident began to unfold when members of the Bingham County Sheriff’s Office and the Joint Investigation Division had gone to a residence near 1250 North, west of Shelley, at approximately 11 p.m. Saturday after spotting the man there, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release.

As officers announced themselves outside the home, the man got into his vehicle with the female passenger and he sped west on 1250 North toward Interstate 15 — driving into oncoming traffic with no headlights on, the Sheriff’s Office said.

He then entered the freeway, driving south on Interstate 15’s northbound lanes, barreling directly at oncoming traffic and refusing to slow down as deputies scrambled to get spike strips into position, authorities said.

A Bingham County deputy intervened first, executing a PIT maneuver by using his patrol vehicle to nudge the suspect’s car. Such maneuvers are meant to cause the suspect vehicle to spin out of control and stop.

In this case, the man’s car left the freeway and overturned, ejecting him and his passenger.

The man died at the scene. The woman was rushed by Shelley Ambulance to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls where she died a short time later.

There were no other injuries, authorities said.

The Eastern Idaho Critical Incident Task Force has taken over the investigation, with Idaho State Police leading and multiple other local law enforcement agencies assisting.

The Sheriff’s Office expressed condolences for the families of the deceased following the incident.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time,” the Sheriff’s Office news release stated.
