REXBURG — An airplane taking off at the Rexburg airport crashed after Monday's eclipse.

Rexburg police officer Ryan Kamachi said the Beechcraft's pilot felt he wasn't getting enough lift upon takeoff. When the pilot tried taking off again, his plane wasn't able to get enough power to clear a chain-link fence separating the airport from the Rexburg Municipal Golf Course. Instead of gaining altitude, the plane crashed into the fence and nosed into the ground.

Neither the pilot or his passenger, both unidentified, were injured.

David Pearce and his son Alex Pearce were golfing nearby at the time of the crash. They said they heard a loud sound and turned to see the plane resting on the grass.

"It sounded like a big truck was coming through," Alex Pearce said.

Kamachi said when police first arrived, fuel was leaking out of the aircraft onto the grass.

"We secured the perimeter in case of any combustion issues," he said, adding that the leaking fuel didn't pose any danger to the public.

The investigation of the crash has been turned over to the Federal Aviation Administration.

"We've definitely seen higher numbers of fly-ins this weekend," Kamachi said, "but we were properly prepared for today's event."
