More backcountry searches were conducted earlier this year and last year for Stephanie Crane, who disappeared in Challis Oct. 11, 1993.

According to Linda Dubiel with the Custer County Sheriff's Office, backcountry searches were conducted in the spring and summer of 2024 and 2025. No information was released about where those searches occurred. Many tips related to the case have been checked into over the decades, Dubiel said.

Stephanie's mom Sandi Crane reported her daughter missing on Oct. 11, 1993. Stephanie was 9. She had been at the Challis bowling alley participating in an after-school league and was supposed to walk home afterwards, but she never arrived home. A search began that same evening and continued for many days. No clues were found, no witnesses ever stepped forward and no crime scene was ever discovered. 

The search will continue until there is a resolution to the case, Dubiel said.
