EAGLE MOUNTAIN, Utah — A 3-year-old girl who was struck by a car Friday evening has died, according to police.

Charlie C. Nielson was hit around 6:30 p.m. Friday near the 7800 block of North Wycliff Way in Eagle Mountain, a community south of Salt Lake City. She was flown by medical helicopter to Primary Children’s Medical Center in Salt Lake City following the incident. Charlie was listed in critical condition Friday night and placed on life support.

Charlie died shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday after her family made the decision to remove her from life support, Utah County Sheriff's Office spokesman Spencer Cannon said.

The Sheriff's Office said Charlie was at a park when her mother called to her to cross the street. There was a car approaching and the mother thought Charlie had enough time to make it, but the child did not move as quickly as the mother expected, Cannon said.

A 23-year-old woman was driving the car that hit the child.

"We don't believe that speed was a factor or distraction or anything like that," Cannon said. "The child was standing in front of the driver without any time for her to react."

Authorities said the accident remains under investigation but at this point they don't feel that there was any negligence on the part of the car's driver.

Pony Express Parkway was closed briefly as a Life Flight helicopter was in the area to pick up Charlie and fly her to Primary Children's.
