POCATELLO — A 20-year-old local woman was recently arrested after police say she attacked another woman, inflicting significant injuries.

Alicia Monique Mata, of Pocatello, has been charged with one felony count of aggravated assault following the Saturday incident, according to police and court records the Idaho State Journal recently obtained.

Pocatello police were dispatched to a home on East Dunn Street around 3:30 a.m. Saturday for the report of two women involved in a physical altercation, police said.

Upon arrival, police knocked several times while screams could be heard from inside of the residence before deciding to kick in the front door, according to the police report.

Inside, officers located the suspected victim, who had severe injuries to her face, with blood and bruising all over her face, a right eye that was swollen shut and significant swelling to the left side of her face, police said.

The victim said that Mata caused her injuries, said police, adding that Mata was observed to have minor lacerations to the tops of her hands.

Mata was then charged, arrested and booked inside the Bannock County Jail in Pocatello.

She appeared in front of 6th District Magistrate Judge Stephen J. Clark for an arraignment hearing on Tuesday, during which she was ordered to be released from jail on her own recognizance.

Mata is due back in court for a preliminary hearing on June 11, during which prosecutors will attempt to prove there is enough evidence against her to elevate the case from the magistrate to district court level for trial.

If convicted of the felony aggravated assault charge, Mata faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000.
