CHUBBUCK — A 28-year-old man is facing felony charges after police say he choked a woman and battered her during three separate incidents over the course of several days.

Taylor Steven Helm, of West Haven, Utah, was arrested and booked into the Bannock County Jail on Monday after local prosecutors filed charges of attempted strangulation, domestic violence battery causing traumatic injury and false imprisonment against him May 15, according to police and court records the Idaho State Journal recently obtained.

Helm was charged following an investigation that began May 4 when Chubbuck police responded to a report of a disturbance. Police said a woman reported that Helm had pushed her into a wall and slammed a door shut hard enough to cause a hole in the wall, then left the residence in a red pickup before officers arrived.

According to court records, the woman told police that she and Helm got into an argument in their bedroom that day, during which Helm grabbed her by the shoulders, pushed her against the wall, took her phone and held the bedroom door shut to keep her from leaving. She told officers it was about 10 minutes before Helm let her go.

While speaking with officers, the woman described two earlier incidents, the first of which occurred May 1 when Helm pushed her up against a door during an argument, which caused a bruise on her lower back that was still visible during the May 4 interview, police said. The woman said a 7-year-old child was present during that incident.

The woman described a second incident that occurred May 2 and involved Helm, whom officers noted was ex-military, grabbing her from behind, wrapping his arm around her neck and squeezing as she tried to go upstairs to get the child, the police report says.

During the second incident, Helm told her, “I might have been a paper pusher, but I tried out for the Rangers. I know how to handle my own,” police said. The woman said she nearly lost consciousness and had trouble breathing before Helm let go, noting that her throat was sore the next day, court records show.

Helm appeared before 6th District Magistrate Judge David W. Cousin for an arraignment hearing via video conference from the Bannock County Jail Tuesday, where his bond was set at $45,000 and a no-contact order was issued between him and the woman. He posted bond later that day and was released from jail.

Helm is scheduled to appear in court again Aug. 3 for a preliminary hearing. Prosecutors will attempt to present sufficient evidence to elevate the case from magistrate to district court for trial.

If convicted of felony domestic violence and attempted strangulation, Helm faces up to 25 years in prison and a fine of up to $60,000.
