The search for Idaho State’s next men’s basketball coach is barely over a week old, but has picked up significant steam on social media and within the rumor mill.

However, on-the-record information has been hard to come by.

Here’s the latest the Journal has obtained regarding the national search.

SEMONS THIROS MEETING WITH COACHES AT MEN’S FINAL FOUR

ISU Athletic Director Pauline Semons Thiros heads to Minneapolis on Thursday morning to “meet with an extensive number” of coaches at the NCAA Final Four, she told the Journal.

Semons Thiros has not named any candidates, nor has she clarified whether she has interviewed any potential fits for the job. She has said multiple times that she is “very excited” and “very pleased” with the “strong pool of candidates this search has attracted.”

FOGLER SEARCH FIRM ON BOARD

ISU is being aided in its search by Fogler Consulting, a search firm founded by former Division I basketball coach Eddie Fogler that is used to help college basketball programs find their next head coach. The firm’s website lists Colorado State, Pittsburgh, Ohio State and Oklahoma State among its clients since 2016.

“We absolutely want to ensure a comprehensive and diverse national pool of candidates who are coaches of integrity, with the depth and breadth of experience we need in order to be successful,” Semons Thiros said. “(Fogler) is not only helpful in further vetting the candidate list, but he is identifying exceptional new candidates to expand our own pool.”

TWO INTERESTED COACHES IDENTIFIED

Two coaches have confirmed their interest in the job to the Journal.

One is former Bengals basketball player and current South Alabama assistant coach Amorrow Morgan. The other wished to remain unidentified, but is the head coach of an NAIA college basketball team and has ties to the Pacific Northwest.

Multiple coaches have also told the Journal they are not interested in the ISU job. One is College of Southern Idaho head men’s basketball coach Jared Phay.

Other names that have been mentioned as potential candidates include BYU assistant coach Quincy Lewis, Northern Colorado assistant coach Steve Smiley, and Boise State assistant coaches Mike Burns and Tim Duryea. The Journal has not been able to confirm their interest in the job opening.

THREE BENGALS COMMITS RE-OPEN RECRUITMENT

In light of the coaching change, three prospective ISU basketball players have re-opened their recruitment and may not play at Idaho State.

The three are Preston native Brayden Parker — the two-time 4A All-Idaho Player of the Year who played this past season with College of Southern Idaho — Minnesota’s Antwan Kimmons (Tartan High School) and Kansas’ Marque English (Pittsburg High/Link Year Prep). Kimmons announced Wednesday his commitment to play at the University of Northern Iowa.

Bengals rising senior guard Brandon Boyd remains in the transfer portal, but has not declared whether he is staying at ISU or transferring for his final college season.
