POCATELLO — Sierra Sanchez began the long walk across the pitch.

With two minutes remaining in Blackfoot’s 5-2 win Thursday against Pocatello, the junior was subbed out and handed a lime green pinnie from her teammate, signaling her exit.

With the pinnie in her hand, Sanchez headed toward the tree behind her team’s bench, where she stood with the pinnie draped down her back like a cape.

It was time for Sanchez to relax in the shade after netting two goals in her team’s conference win.

“I played really well,” Sanchez said. “I played the best I could, and I tried really hard.”

Both of the junior’s goal came during a seven-minute span in the first 40 minutes of play.

Her first found the back of the net in the 35th minute and her second goal gave Blackfoot a 3-1 lead at the end of the first half.

“I kept my mind clear and positive,” Sanchez said. “I went into the game knowing I had to play hard.”

Blackfoot freshman Kelsie Monson scored a first-half goal, and teammate Mariah Quezada netted a free kick in the 71st minute. A Pocatello own-goal in the 17th minute gave Blackfoot a 1-0 lead.

Blackfoot totaled 27 shots and 16 shots on goal in the win.

Thursday was also the second time the Broncos scored five goals in a match this season. In 2015, the squad did it once.

“We played good,” Blackfoot coach Ramon Sanchez said. “We settled the ball on this windy day. We controlled it.”

The loss Thursday was the fourth time in seven games Pocatello allowed three goals or more and the second time the squad allowed five goals.

“Their speed is another thing that threw us into frustration,” Pocatello coach Eric Davis said. “We’ve been as fast or faster than most of the teams we’ve played and this time we didn’t have as much. They had more speed.”

Pocatello was without starting defender Sophie Wray due to sickness. She was replaced by junior Kate Jackman.

“That threw us off a bit,” Davis said of playing without Wray. “That got us frustrated when they came out hard and fast.”

The first half was all about missed chances for Pocatello.

The Indians totaled eight shots, seven of which were on goal. The team’s lone goal in the first 40 minutes came on Nicole Davis’ free kick in the 38th minute to bring Pocatello within two, 3-1.

Poky had five breakaway opportunities in the first half and converted zero.

“We had a lot of chances,” Davis said. “A lot of that was unlucky. But we have to work on the one-on-ones more. They got overexcited.”

For the game, Pocatello had nine shots on goal on 15 total shots.

Alysa Spillett scored in the 65th minute to bring Poky within two, 4-2. But the Indians did not record a shot on goal in the final 25 minutes.

“We couldn’t pull it back together,” Davis said. “We held them down well in the second half. “

Blackfoot (3-3, 2-2 4A District 5-6) hosts Century Tuesday.

Pocatello (3-4, 1-3 4A District 5-6) hosts Preston Tuesday.
