POCATELLO — It took a federal jury just one hour Thursday to convict Demetrius Gomez of second-degree murder in the shooting death of Tyrone Diaz in May.

U.S. Attorney Wendy J. Olson said Gomez was indicted for second-degree murder May 24.

In a press release Friday, Olson said evidence presented at trial May 9 determined that Gomez shot and killed Diaz, who is his cousin, at a residence in Fort Hall.

Diaz died from a fatal shotgun blast to the face at close range.

Sentencing in the case is set for March 21 in front of Chief U.S. District Judge B. Lynn Winmill at the federal courthouse in Pocatello.

Gomez, 29, faces up to life in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000.

The case was investigated by the FBI, Fort Hall tribal police and the Pocatello Police Department.

According to police reports, a witness said she heard Gomez tell Diaz that he was going to shoot him minutes before the shotgun went off.

Gomez instructed the witness to pull her vehicle to the side of the house, but instead she left the mobile home and went to a relative’s home and they notified Fort Hall police.

When officers arrived, Gomez was gone, but officers breached the door and followed a trail of blood to a shed behind the residence where they found Diaz’s body rolled up inside a rug.
