CHUBBUCK — Firefighters from multiple departments battled a destructive house fire north of Chubbuck on Sunday.

The blaze at the two-story residence on Highway 91 between Tyhee and Reservation roads was reported around 11 a.m.

There were no injuries but the fire destroyed the home and displaced the adult female homeowner.

The flames also scorched the siding of the home next door and broke some of its windows and damaged a camper trailer and car parked near the home that was destroyed.

The fire appears to have started in the home’s attached garage but the exact cause of the blaze remains under investigation by the Bannock County Sheriff’s Office.

It took firefighters about 45 minutes to knock down most of the flames but they remained on the scene until around 4 p.m. and then returned around 6 p.m. to extinguish some flames that had rekindled.

The fire shut down Highway 91 until around 3 p.m. Sunday. Smoke from the blaze could be seen from several miles away.

The North Bannock Fire Department was the first to arrive on the scene and its firefighters bravely entered the burning home to search for occupants and then fought the fire from inside and outside the residence.

The homeowner has found temporary housing at an Airbnb until she can find a permanent place to stay.

She was inside the house when the fire ignited in the garage and tried to call 911 but her phone wouldn’t work, authorities said. So she ran to a neighbor’s residence to report the blaze.

Her dog was able to escape the burning home unscathed.

The woman’s name hasn’t been released but the Sheriff’s Office said she is in her 60s and many members of the community have already donated food and clothing to her as she tries to recover from the loss of her home of many years. Fortunately her home was insured, authorities said.

Also responding to the fire were the Chubbuck, Pocatello and Fort Hall fire departments, Chubbuck police and Bannock County sheriff’s deputies.
