Emergency responders from several agencies launched an all-out effort for a second day on Thursday to find a missing Pocatello boy who disappeared after falling into the Snake River while hunting in southwestern Bingham County.

Jayden Jensen, 16, was last seen around 1 p.m. Wednesday when he fell into the Snake River while trying to retrieve a duck he shot, authorities said. He hasn’t been seen since.

Jayden was hunting with some friends who saw him fall into the river and called 911.

The remote area where the incident occurred is in very rough terrain near McTucker Ponds and the American Falls Reservoir, so Jayden’s friends had to guide in the responding Bingham County sheriff’s deputies via cell phone.

The deputies were soon joined by Bingham County Search and Rescue personnel and sheriff’s office scuba divers and patrol boats and an Air Idaho emergency helicopter.

The search for Jayden continued until dusk on Wednesday evening and resumed around 8 a.m. Thursday.

As of 9 p.m. Thursday the boy had still not been located.

Jayden’s father, Shawn Jensen, a wrestling coach at Pocatello’s Irving Middle School, is hoping for a miracle that his son is found alive.

“If anyone can make it through this, it would be him,” Shawn said about his son.

Shawn raced to the scene on Wednesday afternoon after being told by his son’s friends about what happened.

Shawn said when he arrived there were four boats, scuba divers, drones and a helicopter searching for Jayden. Shawn said the Snake River’s current didn’t look strong when he arrived at the scene but closer observation showed that it was fast-moving.

He added that Jayden had waders on, which filled with water when he fell into the freezing river and likely pulled him under.

An emotional Shawn described Jayden as being “super friendly” and said he is the kind of person “who would give you the shirt off his back.”

Shawn said Jayden frequently hunts with him and this was his first year duck hunting. Jayden had attended both Pocatello and Highland high schools but was being homeschooled this year.

The Bingham County Sheriff’s Office said additional agencies responded to the scene of Jayden’s disappearance on Thursday including Fort Hall Fish and Game and Fort Hall swift boat rescue.

Tooleys restaurant in Aberdeen is providing free meals to the dozens of emergency responders at the scene who are searching for Jayden.

Emergency responders from Bonneville County, including scuba divers, are also expected to arrive soon to help in the search.

The Bingham County Sheriff’s Office is urging members of the public to stay away from the scene because of its remote location and the fact that there’s so much snow and mud that even four-wheel drive emergency vehicles are getting stuck.

“The mindset of the awesome people in our community is to drop everything and help and we’d accept that help if it would make things better and easier,” said Jordyn Nebeker, the chief deputy of the Bingham County Sheriff’s Office. “But at this point it would complicate the situation and we’d end up having to rescue more people.”

Emergency responders have shut down the main McTucker Ponds road to give emergency vehicles easier access to the scene.

Nebeker said the search for Jayden is expected to continue until he’s found and additional agencies are offering manpower and equipment to help Bingham County’s responders in the effort.

“We’ll sustain this effort over multiple days if needed,” Nebeker said. “The help we’re getting from all of the other agencies is humbling. When something like this happens, the jurisdictional lines dissolve and everyone comes running to help.”
