Trick or Treat! Halloween is a favorite holiday for many kids, from eating candy to dressing up, spending time with friends, and being outside at night. As Halloween approaches, parents and caregivers must pay close attention to the types of candy their children will receive while trick-or-treating. Choking hazards are a significant concern regarding Halloween candy, and knowing which treats are safer for children is crucial for a fun and safe holiday experience.
Halloween candy comes in various shapes and sizes, and while most are safe, some pose choking risks to young children. Call it a “candy tax” or “the switch witch,” try to sort your child’s candy to remove hard candies like jawbreakers, gumballs, hard candies, lollipops, hard chewy caramel for kiddos under the age of five.
What is safe? Chocolate is a popular and safe choice for children, as it melts easily and quickly in the mouth. Soft, chewy fruit snacks are also easy to eat and are generally safe for children. Non-food treats can be a fun and safe alternative for children of all ages.
Always supervise young children while they’re eating candy, especially those under the age of 4. Remind children to chew their candy thoroughly and slowly to reduce the risk of choking. Offer to trade hard candies and other choking hazards for safer alternatives or non-food treats, such as stickers, small toys, or pencils. Consider taking a CPR course to be prepared in case of an emergency.
Remember, Halloween is a time for spooky fun. You can keep it a safe and enjoyable holiday for all with extra caution. Happy Halloween!
