Richard “Rich” and Peggy (Freckleton) Garvin celebrated their marriage 60 years ago, on May 27, 1964. It wasn’t your average wedding — it took place on the groom’s 24th birthday and the bride wore a cast from hip to toe due to breaking her knee in a car accident. Their life together also has been far from ordinary.

The couple has two daughters, Cori Davis and Adrienne Dellwo, and four grandchildren; Michael and Kaci Davis, and Liam and Naomi Dellwo; plus “bonus” grandchildren Hannah Bossert and Raphael Read.

Rich had a long and successful career with First Security Bank of Idaho. He served as president of the Rotary Club and was an active member of the Pocatello Chiefs. He pioneered the First Security Games, which would later become the Idaho State Games, and has long competed in the games’ track and field events.

While serving as president of the Idaho State University Foundation, he was instrumental in the building of the L.E. and Thelma E. Stephens Performing Arts Center. He also founded NeighborWorks Pocatello and remains on the board. Rich still enjoys lifting weights, sprinting, duck hunting, fishing and painting.

Peggy has served for decades in local Masonic organizations. She was an active member of Job’s Daughters as a teenager. Later, when her daughters joined, Peggy held numerous leadership roles — locally, statewide and internationally. She’s been awarded the Degree of Royal Purple to recognize her many years of dedication.

As an Eastern Star member, she’s served as Worthy Matron and spearheaded fundraising efforts to provide school lunches for underprivileged children. She’s also worked on the board overseeing the running and maintenance of Pocatello’s historic Masonic Temple. Peggy has long been a pianist, quilter, and baker whose pies and jams are legendary among those who know her.

For more than 35 years, the Garvins have been loving stewards of a landmark home that’s now 100 years old. Restored to its original grandeur, it’s often featured in historic home tours.

Rich and Peggy’s family wishes them the happiest of anniversaries. Congratulations on 60 years together. We love you.
