Lyle Lovett is in concert at the Jensen Grand Hall in the Stephens Performing Arts Center this Thursday night at 7:30 p.m. Lovett has broadened the definition of American music in a career that spans 14 albums with elements of country, swing, jazz, folk, gospel and blues. ISU women’s soccer returns home to start Big Sky Conference play this weekend at Davis Field, with matches Friday at 4 p.m. against Portland State, and Sunday at 1 p.m. against Sacramento State. Admission runs $7 for adults and $5 for children and senior citizens. ISU students get in free with Bengal ID. Tickets can be purchased at the gate one hour before the games.

The play, “Last Train to Nibroc” will be performed this Friday and Saturday night at 7:30 p.m. in the Black Box Theatre at the Stephens Performing Arts Center. Set in December 1940, an east-bound train carries the bodies of the great American writers Nathanael West and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Also on board is May, who shares her seat with a charming young flier, Raleigh. Soon they discover they are from neighboring Appalachian towns, and Raleigh decides to change trains and take May to the next Nibroc Festival. “Men in Black: International” is the movie this weekend at the Bengal Theater in the ISU Pond Student Union, with shows Friday and Saturday night at 7 and 9:45 p.m. The Men in Black organization has always protected the Earth from the scum of the universe. In this new adventure, they tackle their biggest threat to date: a mole in the Men in Black organization. Admission is $3 for the public, $2 for ISU staff, and free for ISU students with valid Bengal ID.

Idaho State University football is back this Saturday with their Big Sky Conference opener against Portland State at 3 p.m. at Holt Arena. Tailgate begins at noon. Tickets run $16 to $25 and can be purchased at the game, online at www.idahostatetickets.com, or by calling 282-FANS.

Looking ahead to next week, Sundance Film Festival winner “The Last Black Man in San Francisco” will be shown Oct. 6 at 4:30 and 7 p.m. in the newly remodeled Bengal Theater at the ISU Pond Student Union. “Welcome to the best film of 2019,” writes Rolling Stone Magazine about this story of a young man who dreams of reclaiming the Victorian home his grandfather built in the heart of San Francisco, but the possibilities are fading in a rapidly changing city that seems to have left them behind.
