NORTH VANCOUVER, B.C. — There are a couple of things Idaho State men's basketball coach Ryan Looney is a stickler for: possessions and rebounding margin.

On Monday, he was happy with both as the new-look Bengals beat Capilano University in an exhibition contest, 94-35.

"For our first time together, I thought we did a great job taking care of the ball and offensive rebounding," said Looney, who put 13 new faces on the floor for the Bengals.

Idaho State committed only nine turnovers in the contest, and outrebounded Capilano 45-18 — 23-5 on the offensive glass.

The Bengals got a total of 41 points and 11 rebounds from their new big men, Kenyon DeMuynck and Malachi Johnson. Johnson, a 6-foot-10 sophomore transfer from Division II Cal State Stanislaus, led ISU with 23 points on 7-of-10 shooting and added four rebounds. DeMuynck, a 6-foot-9 junior college transfer from City College of San Francisco, had 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting and four boards.

"The combination of Malachi and Kenyon is very good," Looney said.

ISU also got 10 points from point guard MaCarhy Morris, a Division II transfer who added three assists.

And in a performance that will likely warm Looney's heart, 6-foot-7 wing player Eyal Harel led ISU with 10 boards, six on the offensive end, while adding five steals and nine points. Harel, a native of Israel, transferred to ISU from Pacific.

Looney promised his team was going to pick up the pace on both ends of the floor with their longer, more athletic roster, and he kept his word Monday. The Bengals forced 35 turnovers, including 24 steals, and had 39 points off turnovers.

"(We) guarded 94 feet," said Looney.

ISU started Morris, shooting guard Ty Virgil, who had seven points, Harel, DeMuynck and Johnson. Looney said he's not ready to cast any starting lineup in stone yet, however, and is likely to try different combinations in the final two exhibitions on this summer road trip.

All 15 players on the ISU roster played Monday night, including the only two returners on the roster — guards Landon Birley and Quin Patterson. Birley played 12 minutes and had four points and two rebounds. Patterson struggled shooting the ball, finishing 0-for-4 from the field in 14 minutes, while recording two rebounds and an assist.

California freshmen McKae Amundsen, Joven Dulay and Eli Garner all made contributions in their Bengal debuts. Amundsen, a 5-foot-10 point guard, had four points, two assists and a steal in 10 minutes. Garner, a 6-foot-6 wing player, had five points and four rebounds in 11 minutes. Dulay, also a 6-foot-6 wing player, had two points and four rebounds in six minutes. Freshman 6-foot-10 post Bryce Lowenbach from Oregon scored two points and had two steals in 10 minutes.

The Bengals shot 44% from the field (32 of 72), and struggled from three-point range, hitting just four of 22 (18%) from beyond the arc.

ISU is off tonight, then plays Langara College in Vancouver on Wednesday. They'll likely get their biggest test on Thursday against the University of Fraser Valley in Abbotsford, B.C.
