PROVO, Utah — Calm, cool and collected, BYU’s Taysom Hill did his part to help the Cougars take down budding rival Boise State.

    The rest of the Cougars helped seal the deal.

    Hill threw for 339 yards and ran for 69 more as BYU beat the Broncos 37-20 on national television Friday evening in Provo. The defense helped the cause as it forced four turnovers, of which the Cougars capitalized.

    “I don’t know how many turnovers they had, but they had a number, and that was the difference in the football game right there,” Hill said. “Credit to the defense for playing hard and getting those take-aways.”

    BYU controlled the game from the get-go. Hill continued his recent passing dominance against a Boise State secondary that got burnt by deep ball after deep ball. Hill had touchdown passes of 37 and 40 yards as he finished with three scores through the air. He added another on the ground.

    Most importantly, Hill and Co. went the entire contest without turning the ball over.

    With the Cougars’ balanced attack firing on all cylinders, and its defense playing lights out, the Broncos had no answer.

    BYU led Boise State 24-3 at halftime.

    “Our defense is really good,” Hill said. “I know that if we come out and execute offensively, we have the opportunity to do that against anybody we play. Luckily, we got going early in the football game, which set us up to come out, run the clock and get the win like we did.

    “It was a team effort tonight.”

    With a big lead in hand, the Cougars went to their conservative offense in the final three quarters, using a slower pace to eat up clock.

    Boise State got a pair of touchdowns, one in the third period and another in the fourth to close within 14 points at 34-20.

    Hill led a time-draining drive that resulted in a Justin Sorensen 41-yard field goal with three minutes remaining on the clock. The final three points put the game out of reach for the Broncos.

    BYU rolled up 568 yards of total offense on the evening.

    BYU is bowl eligible at 6-2 on the season, and accepted an invitation to the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl after the game. The Cougars will face a Pac-12 team in San Francisco Dec. 27.
