In the battle of perfection, one team had to remain flawless.

    And against Idaho Falls, Highland emerged virtually unscathed in a 51-6 beatdown Friday night at Holt Arena.

    Thad Hansen rushed for 145 yards, three scores on the ground and one through the air, and Greg Gwinn added a 98-yard kickoff return to throttle the Tigers and claim the 5A 5th District’s No. 1 seed.

    Things looked tight as Idaho Falls drove downfield to begin the game, taking advantage of an encroachment penalty on fourth-and-2 to invade Highland territory.

    But the Highland defense stiffened up on another fourth down, giving the ball to its offense.

    Before Highland could capitalize on the turnover-on-downs, Christian Atkinson fumbled after a reception fighting to gain extra yards, giving Idaho Falls another chance. But Highland’s Dylan Manning picked off Idaho Falls’ AJ Martin, and a play later, Highland’s Tommy Jewell found Mitch Haber outrunning double coverage for a 42-yard over-the-shoulder bomb. It was the first of three opportunities Highland got off of interceptions.

    “When our defense gets interceptions, we have to put it away,” Jewell said. “We have to put it in the end zone.”

    Jewell finished the game 14 for 18 for 232 yards, three touchdowns and no picks.

    The game remained 6-0 (Highland’s extra point attempt was blocked) until midway through the second quarter when Dallan Rodriguez hit a 29-yard field goal.

    On the next play from scrimmage, Idaho Falls’ Dakota Baker streaked past Highland cornerback Angel Chavez, and Martin found him for the 80-yard touchdown reception. The Tigers’ two-point conversion attempt failed. The score was 9-6

    The idea of a tight slugfest between the two teams was put to rest in the scoring onslaught that followed, and it was Gwinn who ignited it.

    Gwinn burst through a seam on the ensuing kickoff, galloping 98 yards up the right sideline. The score was 16-6.

    Gwinn wasn’t done squashing the Tigers’ hopes. On Idaho Falls’ next play from scrimmage, Gwinn intercepted a Martin pass over the middle and returned it to the Idaho Falls 24-yard line. After a 22-yard completion from Jewell to Nate Page, Hansen bulldozed his way past the left tackle into the endzone. The score was 23-6.

    Highland piled on 14 points in just over a minute. After Kyler Manu picked off Martin with 3:23 left in the half and Hansen found the endzone again to end the second quarter, the Tigers were on life support.

    But the way the first quarter ended, Highland head coach Gino Mariani didn’t predict the second-quarter thwacking.

    “I don’t think it was easy at all,” he said. “We got the turnovers and that made it a little easier, but that was a fistfight early on. They’re a very physical football team.”

    Jewell held similar beliefs.

    “We got punched in the face, but we punched right back,” he said. “They came out hard. They came out tough.”

    Highland scored three more times in the second half. Hansen ran for a score and caught another, and Kam Farnsworth nabbed a 17-yard scoring reception. Hansen finished with four catches for 41 yards.

    “It was definitely a fun game,” Hansen said. “We started a little slow, but we got things together. We got a little momentum and just carried through there.”

    With the No. 1 seed in the district, Highland is guaranteed homefield advantage leading up the state championship game.

    “It’s big. It’s what we worked for all year,” Mariani said. “It’s our goal to force those Boise schools to come over here. We have a pretty good advantage, and we’re looking forward to that.”

    But before Highland (8-0) begins postseason play, it has one game remaining on the schedule. The Rams travel to play Madison (3-6) Friday at 7 p.m.

    “You can’t look ahead,” Jewell said. “You get finished with an opponent, (and) you’ve got to look up at the next one. ... We can’t look ahead to our first game of the playoffs. We’ve got to get focused on Madison.”
