POCATELLO — Want to find the leader in the Labor Day Amateur golf tournament in Pocatello? Try the First Flight.

    Thanks in part to a scheduling conflict with the Idaho Golf Association, which scheduled a tournament at Driggs on this same holiday weekend, only four players are vying in the Championship flight in Pocatello. Many of the city’s better golfers have opted to compete instead in the Men’s Mid-Amateur event at Driggs.

    Thus the local tournament will go on Monday with good numbers in the First and Second  flight. The fact the Championship Flight is limited to those with zero to three handicaps also may have limited the field.

    Based on the Chicago system of scoring, Josh Hartman and Ronnie Ward paced the first day’s numbers, each at minus 2. Nate Nyman was minus 3, and Justin Hagar minus 13.

    Things are more competitive in the First Flight, open to 4-11 handicappers, where Jacob Barron hung up a score of plus 8 at Riverside. Richard Shipp was at plus 7, Kirk Hartman and Scott Christensen at plus 6, Alf Lopez and Ben Carlson at plus 5. There was a five-way tie at plus 2 among Farren Hunt, Jeremy Timpson, Josh Neeser, Kelly Harris and Ryan Ray.

    In the Second Flight, for those 12 and over, Aaron McLaughlin set the pace with plus 10, Jeff Clark was at plus 8, Sean White at plus 7, Shayne Proctor at plus 6, Mackey Morrison and Rick Hedstrom at plus 4, Billy Crosland at plus 3, and J.D. Bloxham, Bob McCann and Troy Thompson at plus 2.

    Points are awarded eight for eagles on a hole, four for birdies, two for pars and one for bogeys. Handicaps set target scores which players must exceed to earn points.

    The tournament will conclude Monday at Highland.
