In the middle of football season comes what will no doubt turn out to be some very exciting postseason high school soccer.
Many of the girls and boys teams begin their district tournaments today while others continue what they started last weekend.
Here is a rundown of each division and what fans can expect to see today:
5A:
On the boys side, the 5A Fifth/Sixth District tournament takes place at the Idaho Falls Soccer Complex. Top-seeded Hillcrest will take on Idaho Falls at 2 p.m.
With a record of 8-5-4, the Highland Rams finished second in the conference and earned an automatic berth into the district tournament. They will face Skyline at 4 p.m. today, who played its way in with a victory on Saturday.
The winner takes on the winner of Hillcrest and Idaho Falls for the district championship and a trip to state. Should the Rams lose, they will face the loser of the early game and their road to state becomes harder.
The Highland girls (13-3-2) will also take on Skyline as the second seed at the same soccer complex in I.F. Their game begins at 4 p.m. as well.
The winner faces the winner of Hillcrest and Madison on Thursday in the same situation as the boys.
4A:
The Century boys (11-15-1) played their way into the 4A Fifth/Sixth District tournament with a 5-0 victory over Pocatello last Saturday. They now must face second-seeded Preston at 4 p.m. The teams split their two regular season contests and fans should expect today’s game to be very competitive.
This contest takes place at the Century Soccer Complex.
The winner will play the winner of Blackfoot and Bonneville for the district crown.
The Lady Diamondbacks (11-3-2) earned the first seed for their tournament and will play Bonneville at 2 p.m., also at the Century Soccer Complex.
The second game features Preston and Blackfoot. The two winners will play on Thursday for a district championship and a spot at state.
3A:
The 3A Fifth District tournament actually started last Saturday with the American Falls and Aberdeen boys teams picking up victories. Marsh Valley and American Falls also won on the girls side, setting up today’s district title matches.
All game are being played at American Falls High School. The A.F. and Aberdeen boys will play at 4 p.m. while the A.F. and M.V. girls teams play at the same time.
The losers from Saturday’s games (Marsh Valley and Snake River boys, Snake River and Aberdeen girls) play at 2 p.m. today as well. The winners of these contests take on the losers of the championship games on Thursday.
Whoever wins those games has to take on a Sixth District team for a spot in the state tournament.
