BLACKFOOT — Blackfoot’s 18-game winning streak ended at the hands of Madison last week, but the state’s top-ranked 4A team didn’t let the stinging loss carry over to its next game.

    Behind the electric quarterback and wide receiver duo of Alonzo Ramos and Colby Pearson, the Broncos built a 20-point halftime lead and hung on to beat Pocatello 34-13 Friday night at Blackfoot High School.

    Four of the Broncos’ five touchdowns came from the same kind of play — Ramos to Pearson.

    Ramos found Pearson for touchdown catches of 27, 11, 13 and 25 yards. In total, Pearson had eight catches for 114 yards, along with the four scores.

    The Indians had no answer for the 6-foot-1 senior wideout, nor did they find a way to stop Ramos.

    Throughout the night, the Blackfoot signal caller converted on third and fourth downs, either with his arm or legs, to extend drives. Ramos finished with 256 yards through the air and another 80 on the ground.

    “It was a little scary thinking how we’d respond to (the loss), but we came out and played our football,” Pearson said. “I’m proud of the guys and how we responded.”

    With the win, Blackfoot, 7-1 overall and 4-0 in district play, sews up the top seed out of the 4A Fifth/Sixth District.

    Pocatello, mired in a three-game losing streak, is 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the Fifth/Sixth District. The Indians are now eliminated from the postseason.

    “A little bit too much speed and a little bit too much beef from Blackfoot,” said Pocatello head coach Tom Harrison. “We couldn’t get our running game on track, and it put a lot of pressure on a lot of other areas.

    “We made some nice plays at times but we couldn’t sustain drives. ... If you can’t run it, you can’t sustain a drive.  I think they really contained our run and that’s what we’re good at usually. And it just doesn’t happen tonight.”

    On the night, Pocatello ran for 137 yards and managed 3.7 yards per rushing attempt.

    And while Blackfoot’s quarterback found success through the both the air and ground, Pocatello’s Bodie Cooper struggled to find open receivers down the field. Cooper was 7-of-19 for 170 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.

    “(I’m) pretty happy, obviously. Number one position. That will help out a lot as far as playing at home,” said Blackfoot head coach Stan Buck. “Somebody’s got to be good to come and beat us.”

    On Friday, the Broncos finish their regular season at Rigby at 7 p.m.

    Pocatello hosts Century in Holt Arena at 7 p.m.

    “We’ve got to get prepared for that,” Harrison said. “We can’t sit around and feel sorry for ourselves. That’s a game that’s important to our kids and important to our school. That’s one we’ve got to go out and play hard for.”
