POCATELLO — A pair of Poky catchers led the Razorbacks to a 6-1 win over Bear Lake on Tuesday at Halliwell Park.

Jarod Nalley and Quinton Standley combined to drive in five of Pocatello’s six runs. Nalley smacked two doubles and Standley called pitches the whole game from behind the plate.

Nalley, a senior-to-be at Pocatello High, played first base Tuesday and opened the scoring in the opening inning with an RBI double to score Jake Sorensen. Standley, a sophomore-to-be for the Indians, followed Nalley’s double with a run-scoring single to push the Razorbacks’ lead to 2-0 in the first.

Nalley doubled home two more runners in the third and Standley drove in Pocatello’s final run of the game with an RBI single in the fifth.

“Nalley, Standley, they’re hitting the ball well lately,” said Razorbacks coach Russ Davie. “Our middle of the order have always been hitting well throughout the whole season. We just gotta rally around them.”

Davie let Standley control the game at catcher. Davie said he usually calls pitches himself, but for the last couple weeks he’s been giving his catchers the freedom to call games.

“I have a pretty good feel,” Standley said. “I’ve caught for (Sorensen) quite a bit, so I’m pretty used to him. I know his pitches pretty well.”

Sorensen threw 6 1/3 innings, holding Bear Lake (9-7, 5-4 Area C) to a run on five hits. He walked more batters (five) than he struck out (four) and ended his day with 48 balls and 45 strikes. But Sorensen kept Bear Lake off balance enough to be effective. Cordell Shipley recorded the final two outs in the seventh.

Bear Lake had opportunities to score despite inconsistent hitting.

A groundout to short ended a bases-loaded threat in the second, a two-out rally was nipped in the sixth with runners on first and second and Shipley induced a groundout to end the game with the bases juiced in the seventh. Sam Roberts went 3 for 3 to account for half of Bear Lake’s hits.

“We didn’t get the bats going,” said Bear Lake coach Craig Culver, who added of Roberts: “He’s been working really hard. We need him in the lineup to be good.”

Bear Lake starter Wyatt Anderson threw a complete game, walking one and striking out four. He threw 58 of his 86 pitches for strikes and was pushed to three-ball counts by three of the 29 batters he faced.

“I was really impressed with how Wyatt pitched,” Culver said. “He kept them off balance pretty well.”

Pocatello’s win wasn’t without struggles. The Razorbacks (27-9, 9-1) failed to execute two sacrifice bunts — once popping into a double play — and Davie removed two players from the game after at-bats that ended in strikeouts with a runner in scoring position and two outs.

“Our mental stuff, being able to move runners over, bunting. Just the mental part of the game we’re trying to fix right now,” Davie said.

Game two: Cooper throws 3-hitter, Razorbacks down Bear Lake 10-0

Pocatello’s Trent Cooper threw a complete game three-hitter in game two and the Razorbacks drew 10 walks to mercy-rule Bear Lake, 10-0 in five innings.

Cooper struck out three and walked one while throwing 30 of his 42 pitches for strikes.

“He kept the ball down,” Davie said. “Trent has an awkward release, keeps the ball inside a little bit, has some good off-speed. He just threw well.”

Pocatello scored five runs in the opening inning and benefited from five Bear Lake errors. Tyler Frasure, Jarod Nalley and Quinton Standley doubled and Jace McCloskey had a 2-for-3 day.

Standley drove in a pair of runs, giving him four RBIs in the doubleheader.

“That kid’s on fire,” Davie said of Standley.

Bear Lake starter Brevyn Keetch gave up 10 runs, but only four were earned. He struck out three and walked 10.

Pocatello next plays at Canyon Ridge on Friday in a doubleheader and Bear Lake travels to Twin Falls and Buhl for games Friday and Saturday.
