MONTPELIER − During the Bear Lake girls basketball team’s win against Marsh Valley on Friday, Bear Lake’s Halle Wells broke a major milestone—scoring over 1,000 points in her high school career.

Wells is nearing the end of her junior year and considers the achievement to be just another step in her journey as a player.

“For me [scoring 1,000 career points] means that my hard work has paid off so far,” Wells said. “It wasn’t really a goal to me but I thought it would be neat if I did achieve it.”

This season, Bear Lake has set high goals as a team and Wells is one of the players leading the charge. Her 1000 career points are a testament to her competitive drive.

Wells is not just dominant on offense as her 6-foot-1 frame is a huge threat to opposing teams on defense. She currently averages 2.9 blocks per game, which ranks her third in the state of Idaho for blocks. Wells also leads the Bears in steals per game, which makes her one of the team’s strongest defensive tools.

Wells has been playing varsity girls basketball for Bear Lake since her freshman year. During that year, she put up over 11 points and nine rebounds per game, which gave the Bears a boost and helped them win a state championship. She considers this achievement to be one she is most proud of.

During her sophomore year, she built upon her freshman success and put up 14 points and 9.5 rebounds per game. However, in the end they fell short of the state championship title. They lost to Sugar Salem in the championship game and were the state runner up for the 4A division.

Despite being only a junior, Wells’ commitment is rubbing off on the rest of the team.

“Halle is also very competitive,” said Coach Ken Wells, Wells’ father. “She wants to win every drill or competition we have, which pushes us collectively as a team.”

Wells said that her hard work and dedication are not just to make herself better, but her team as a whole better.

The regular season ended for Wells and the Bears with their game against Marsh Valley. Since coming up short last year, Wells has had her focus on winning both the district and state championships.

Bear Lake played against American Falls in their first district tournament game on Tuesday (scores unavailable at press time).
