5A District 5-6 tournament

HIGHLAND 1, BONNEVILLE 1 (Highland 4-2 in PKs)

Highland kept its season alive Saturday with a penalty-kick win over Bonneville at home in a 5A District 5-6 play-in game.

Ben Elizarraras, Tyler Kelley, Garrison Smith and Hunter Anderson converted penalty kicks after Nico Lira tied the score at 1-1 in regulation. Rams goalkeeper Dallin Bunderson made two saves during the penalty-kick round to seal the win.

“He’s a beast at these,” Highland coach Mark Muzzo said of Bunderson.

Highland (6-8-1) continues district tournament play Monday at Hillcrest.

4A District 5-6 tournament

CENTURY 10, POCATELLO 0

Century drubbed Pocatello 10-0 at home Saturday in the first round of the 4A District 5-6 tournament.

Century coach Rocky Rhoads highlighted the following goal scorers: Amaria Evans (two), Logan Johnson (one), and Braydin Coffin (one).

“The kids were confident in front of the goal. That was nice to see,” Rhoads said. “They didn’t miss any opportunities.”

Century (9-3-5) plays Monday at Idaho Falls. Pocatello finished the season 0-14.

PRESTON 3, SKYLINE 0

Preston opened up the 4A District 5-6 tournament with a 3-0 home win Saturday over Skyline.

The Indians’ Jakobi Dursteler scored twice, while Junior Mureilo added one goal to eliminate the Grizzlies.

“The boys were pretty fired up. They were ready to go,” Preston coach Kira Matthews said. “Shows how bad they want to win and do well throughout districts.”

Preston (4-4-5) plays Monday at top-seeded Blackfoot.

3A District 5 tournament at American Falls

SNAKE RIVER 1, AMERICAN FALLS 0

First-seeded American Falls fell 1-0 at home Saturday against Snake River in the second round of the 3A District 5 tournament.

The lone goal was scored on a first-half penalty kick.

“We’re disappointed,” American Falls assistant coach Caroline Wight said. “Both teams played hard, and we didn’t have shots that connected.”

American Falls (11-3-1) hosts Marsh Valley on Tuesday in an elimination game. The winner then faces Snake River (6-8-1) on Tuesday.

MARSH VALLEY 5, ABERDEEN 0

Marsh Valley beat Aberdeen 5-0 on Saturday to stay alive in the 3A District 5 tournament. The loss ended the Tigers’ season, with a record of 0-10-2.

“I expected more, but it’s hard with everything going,” Aberdeen assistant coach Javier Uribe Jr. said.

Marsh Valley (6-5-3) plays Tuesday at American Falls for a chance to play for a district title.

4A District 5-6 tournament

BLACKFOOT 3, POCATELLO 2

Blackfoot defeated Pocatello 3-2 in overtime Saturday at home in the first round of the 4A District 5-6 tournament.

Litzy Guzman scored the game-winning goal on a free kick just outside the box, five minutes into the extra period. Elexus Nochebuena scored the other two goals for the Broncos.

“Very tough game, but we pushed through,” Blackfoot coach Ramon Sanchez said. “It was a tough battle. Very aggressive game.”

Pocatello’s Nicole Davis and Adison Spillett scored one goal each.

Blackfoot (6-8) plays Monday at Century. Pocatello finished the season 4-10-1.

3A District 5 tournament at American Falls

AMERICAN FALLS 7, SNAKE RIVER 1

American Falls routed Snake River 7-1 at home Saturday in the second round of the 3A District 5 tournament.

Halle Romero and Jesica Robinson each scored three goals for the Beavers, while teammate McKenzie Long scored once.

“We fell short last year,” American Falls coach Mario Torres said. “We came out there with the focus of heartbreak from last year. They’re driven and know what they want.”

American Falls (14-3) hosts Marsh Valley in the district championship Tuesday. Snake River hosts Malad on Tuesday in a loser-out game.

MALAD 5, ABERDEEN 0

Malad eliminated Aberdeen from the 3A District 5 tournament Saturday with a 5-0 win.

“They all improved this season, for sure,” Aberdeen assistant coach Javier Uribe Jr. said.

Malad (5-7) plays Tuesday at Snake River in a loser-out game.

SWIMMING

The Pocatello, Highland and Century co-op boys team finished in first place at Saturday’s Portneuf Valley High School Invitational at Idaho State. The Gate City girls co-op team finished second at the event.

PHS’s Kaitlyn Shelley won the girls 50-yard and 100-yard freestyles. Teammate Coleman Sandy won the boys 50-yard and 100-yard freestyles.

The North Gem girls team and Soda Springs boys team each finished ninth Saturday.
