The National Hurricane Center says the tropical cyclone named Polo is now a hurricane in the Pacific Ocean. Polo is expected to become a major hurricane by Wednesday. It could bring up to a foot of rain to parts of coastal Mexico. The hurricane was centered Monday about 290 miles south-southeast of Manzanillo, Mexico. Tropical Storm Odalys is farther west in the Pacific and is not a threat to land. However, forecasters say Odalys will become a hurricane by midweek. Tropical Storm Fay is in the Atlantic Ocean and is weakening.
Hurricane Polo is gaining strength as it moves along Mexico's southwestern coast as a Category 5 cyclone. The Miami-based National Hurricane Center reports Polo is an “extremely dangerous” storm with maximum sustained winds of 165 mph. It was centered Tuesday about 210 miles south of Zihuatanejo, Mexico, and nearly stationary over the Pacific Ocean. Mexican authorities have suspended classes in some areas, and the U.S. Embassy issued a weather alert. Heavy rain could cause flash flooding and mudslides in Guerrero and Michoacán states. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Odalys is in the Pacific Ocean but far from land.
Southwestern Mexico is bracing for heavy rain and mudslides after Polo became a major hurricane in the Pacific. Forecasters also warned Wednesday that another system heading toward Hawaii could cause catastrophic flooding later in the week. Hurricane Polo is expected to skirt Mexico’s Guerrero state, submerging coastal areas with up to 6 inches of rain through Thursday. Guerrero has been repeatedly pummeled by hurricanes in recent years. Tropical Storm Nolo was expected to approach the Big Island as early as Friday. Nolo is projected to drop up to 20 inches of rain, raising the possibility of flooding and mudslides.
