A five-vehicle crash that occurred in Shelley on Saturday has claimed the lives of two people.

Jean Hurrle, 24, of Idaho Falls, and a juvenile, whose name has not been released, both died from the injuries they sustained in the incident, according to Idaho State Police.

Authorities say the chain-reaction crash took place in Shelley, a city located in Bingham County, shortly before 1 p.m.

The incident began when Idaho Falls resident Michael Chaffin, 65, who was driving a 2016 Ford F-350 north on U.S. 91, stopped for traffic while he was attempting to make a left turn. Firth resident Taylor France, 42, who was driving a 2016 Toyota Tacoma, and Idaho Falls resident Caitlyn Evans, 20, who was driving a 2012 Nissan Sentra, also slowed down.

But police say Firth resident Jericka Evans, 29, who was driving a 2016 Ford F-350, failed to slow down for the stopped traffic and subsequently struck the Nissan Sentra, leading to a chain-reaction.

“Both the Nissan Sentra and the Toyota Tacoma were forced into the southbound lane of travel,” according to a news release, which adds that the vehicles were then struck by a southbound 2001 Ford F-150, driven by Idaho Falls resident Guadalupe Vega, 37.

Hurrle and the juvenile, who were passengers in the Nissan Sentra, were transported by ground ambulance to Eastern Idaho Medical Center in Idaho Falls along with Caitlyn Evans and Jericka Evans, police said.

Both Hurrle and the juvenile died of their injuries at the hospital, police said.

Jericka Evans was treated and released, according to hospital officials. Caitlyn Evans was still at the hospital on Monday afternoon, but was listed in good condition.

Both lanes of the highway were shut down for roughly four hours following the crash, police said. Bingham County sheriff’s deputies assisted at the scene.
