Franklin County Medical Center has opted out of the International Bed Race this year and the activities surrounding it.
Tracy Jensen, the past chairwoman of the Bed Race, said she’s been doing the bed race for a long time and she wants to go visit family this year. She said she tried to get someone else to do it, but hasn’t had any takers.
The Bed Race has been a 20-year tradition and Saturday’s biggest draw for Festival of Lights. It included a Pajama Party before the race where hot chocolate and cookies were served. Also part of the activities was a Bed Race Parade before the race.
In the past businesses, organizations and families put together teams of eight runners and two riders to race down State Street to crowds of cheering fans.
There were prizes for the race winners, best costumes and best decorated beds.
“We have approached some businesses about taking over the bed race and have not been successful,” said Ron Smellie, this year’s chairman.
