A woman was airlifted to a local hospital after leaping from an SUV while it was traveling on Interstate 15 in southern Bannock County, Idaho State Police reported.

The incident occurred around 8:45 p.m. Saturday when the woman jumped out of a 2005 Toyota Highlander that was heading southbound on the freeway between Downey and Arimo, authorities said.

The woman was a passenger in the vehicle and after she jumped the driver stopped the SUV and remained on the scene until emergency responders arrived.

The woman suffered serious injuries during the incident and was airlifted via emergency helicopter from the scene to Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello.

Authorities are not releasing the woman’s name, but said she is expected to survive.

State police said the incident remains under investigation.
