IDAHO FALLS — The Museum of Idaho (MOI) has introduced its next exhibit as “Mummies of the World: The Exhibition,” slated to open May 31 with a ribbon cutting.

The exhibit will be a part of the special traveling exhibit program at the MOI that’s been alive since 2003 and will be active through Jan. 4, 2026. It’s produced by World Heritage Exhibitions under Neon Global and is the most expensive traveling exhibit the MOI has brought in over a decade.

According to a statement on Tuesday, it’s one of the largest assembled mummy and artifact collections ever. Ancient mummies from South America, Europe, Egypt and the United States − from 4,500 years old to relatively recent − are included in the exhibit.

“Every exhibit we bring in, we bring in because we think it will be interesting and important to the east Idaho community,” MOI Executive Director Jeff Carr said in the statement.

Carr has been a part of the MOI for eight years. He has served as executive director since early 2023 and is particularly excited to bring this exhibit to east Idaho.

A mummy family from Hungary, a German nobleman, Egyptian animal mummies and more will be included. The exhibit originally debuted in 2010 in Los Angeles and has since visited over 20 cities in the US and Europe with more than 2.4 million visitors.

“All of our exhibits are big deals,” Carr said. “But this one is a really big deal.”

Events that will be in conjunction with the exhibit include pop-in programs for families, Discovery Days for grades 3-6, Little Learners for toddlers, a Museum Club Speaker Series and a Museum After Dark event for adults 21 and over.

The museum does not receive any city, state or federal funding, according to Carr, as the establishment is a non-profit. The museum also never reuses exhibits, but has had Egyptian artifacts as part of previous exhibits.

“We rely on the community in a lot of ways,” Carr said in relation to the museum’s ability to function. “We’ve been gratified about how much excitement in the community there’s been about this exhibit.”

The “Way Out West” exhibit — which is always open — and the “Signs of the Times” exhibit that’s available through Feb. 22 will still run along with Mummies of the World.
