POCATELLO — Tydeman Park will be converted into a launch pad this weekend for Idaho State University’s annual Water Rocket Festival.
The festival will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 27, and Sunday, June 28, at Tydeman Park on North Eighth Ave. and East Young St., according to a news release from ISU.
On both days of the festival, the first 100 youth ages 16 and younger will receive the materials they need to build a water rocket. ISU students will help the young participants design, build and launch their rockets. The builder of the rocket that flies the farthest will win their own water rocket launcher.
“The Water Rocket Festival is STEM fun for the whole family, and a great way for kids to actively learn about Newton’s laws, mechanical energy, aerodynamics, and more,” said Steve Shropshire, professor of physics at ISU.
Winners from previous Water Rocket Festivals have had their rockets travel up to 328 feet.
The festival is being held in conjunction with the Kiwanis Club of Pocatello’s 58th Annual Bing Hong Pancake Breakfast fundraiser.
