i15 crash12

POCATELLO — A Layton, Utah, man died Thursday afternoon after the semi-truck he was driving veered off Interstate 15 in south Pocatello and overturned, authorities said.

The Bannock County Coroner's Office has identified the victim as Shawn Tingey, 63.

The crash occurred at 1:11 p.m. when a 2020 Volvo tractor-trailer traveling northbound on I-15 near mile marker 63 left the right shoulder for unknown reasons, struck a hillside, overturned and came to rest atop a guardrail. Tingey, the only person involved in the crash, was wearing a seatbelt but succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

"My heart is with Shawn's friends and family as they mourn the loss of their loved one," Bannock County Coroner Torey Danner said.

The crash closed the right northbound lane for several hours. State police temporarily diverted all northbound traffic off the interstate at the Inkom exit to allow towing crews to flip the semi upright and remove it from the scene. The left northbound lane reopened around 7:30 p.m. and the right lane reopened at 8:30 p.m.

The crash remains under investigation by Idaho State Police. Motorists can follow 511.idaho.gov for traffic updates.
