The campaign to possess New Guinea was fought from January 1942, right up until the end of the war in the Pacific in 1945. New Guinea was of strategic importance to the war effort in the Pacific Theater because of its location as a major land mass off the coast of Australia. Allied oerations on New Guinea were an essential part of the campaign to liberate the Philippines Islands from Japanese control, and the further Allied drive toward Japan itself.
