POCATELLO — A 21-year-old Pocatello man was recently arrested after police say he pointed a gun at a local woman while intoxicated and then resisted arrest.

William James Allred has been charged with felony aggravated assault as well as misdemeanor resisting and obstructing and possession of a firearm while under the influence following the Pocatello police investigation.

The incident began to unfold around 6:40 p.m. on June 3 when Pocatello police were dispatched to the area of Orchard Street and Foothill Boulevard for the report of a man who pointed a gun at a woman, according to police records the Idaho State Journal recently obtained.

The reporting party described the man as wearing a red jacket and plaid shorts and that he appeared to be staggering, police said.

Officers located a man who matched that description at the intersection of Rosewood Street and Foothill Boulevard and commanded him to get on the ground. The man, later identified as Allred, immediately complied with officers, the report says.

While on the ground, Allred advised officers that he had a gun in his pocket, so officers secured him in handcuffs, conducted a pat down search, and retrieved the gun from his pocket, police said.

Officers stood Allred up and explained to him that he was being detained because a woman reported that he pointed a gun at her, said police, adding that Allred became very angry and denied ever pointing the gun at anyone.

Allred then just started yelling “just shoot me, just take your gun out and shoot me,” toward the officers and began thrashing around violently, the report says.

Officers took Allred to the ground again and while on the ground observed a strong odor of alcohol coming from Allred’s breath, police said. Officers also noticed that his speech was slurred and his eyes were bloodshot, the report says.

Officers then told Allred he was under arrest for resisting and obstructing and placed in the back of a patrol vehicle, police said.

Officers interviewed the reporting party who said that she drove past Allred before realizing that she needed to turn around so she made a U-turn and upon driving by him again she observed him point a gun toward her, the report says.

The woman then asked officers if Allred did have a gun and they told her that she did, to which the woman replied, “Wow, he could have shot me.”

While in the back of the patrol car, Allred started thrashing around again and was ultimately placed in a WRAP restraint device before being transported to the Bannock County Jail in Pocatello.

He appeared in front of 6th District Judge David Cousin for an arraignment hearing on June 4, during which his bond was set at $40,000.

Allred is due back in court on June 18 for a preliminary hearing that will involve local prosecutors attempting to prove there is enough evidence against him to elevate the case from the magistrate to district court level for trial.

If convicted of the felony aggravated assault charge, Allred faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000.
