POCATELLO — An 18-year-old local woman was recently arrested after police say she stabbed a man in the back with a boxcutter during a Pocatello apartment complex fracas.

McKena Marie Delgado, of Blackfoot, has been charged with felony aggravated battery, according to police and court records the Idaho State Journal recently obtained. Prosecutors are also seeking a deadly weapon enhancement against her for using a weapon during the commission of a felony crime, court records show.

The incident unfolded around 9 a.m. Sunday, after Pocatello police were dispatched to a Freeman Lane apartment complex for a report of a disturbance.

Initial callers reported multiple people involved in a physical altercation with at least one individual covered in blood, police said.

When officers arrived, all three main parties involved had left the scene. Officers located and stopped a vehicle leaving the area and located a rear seat passenger who was transported to Portneuf Medical Center for treatment of sharp force trauma to his leg and blunt force trauma to his head, police said.

He was later transferred to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center for a higher degree of care due to the severity of his head injuries, according to court records.

A second man returned to the scene at approximately 10 a.m. and was transported to Portneuf Medical Center by private vehicle for sharp force trauma wounds to his back, police said. Delgado was located at a separate part of the apartment complex at approximately 10:30 a.m. and consented to being transported and interviewed at the Pocatello Police Department, court records show.

Officers later interviewed the man who had been transported from the scene with head and leg injuries, who told police he had witnessed the second man battering Delgado by grabbing her and throwing her around, the report says. He told officers he intervened by shoving the second man and striking him multiple times to stop him from harming Delgado, police said.

He told officers that he disengaged and exited the residence but was then pursued outside by the second man and others, taken to the ground, choked and beaten badly enough that he believed he was going to die, according to court records.

The second man told officers he had been woken up and unprovokedly attacked by the first man, and that when the first man fled he pursued him outside and struck him multiple times, police said. The second man reported that Delgado then attacked him from behind with what he believed to be punches to his back. He told officers he was certain Delgado was the only person who struck him in that area, according to the police report. The wounds to his back appeared consistent in dimension with a boxcutter blade, police said.

A witness who observed the fight from an apartment directly overlooking the outdoor confrontation told officers he saw Delgado holding what appeared to be a small knife and making stabbing motions while she was engaged in the fight, police said. Officers located and collected a boxcutter from the parking lot adjacent to the scene, according to court records.

Delgado denied being involved in the fight except to try to pull participants apart in a secondary altercation. She denied knowing the second man was present and stated she had no part in the violence except to break it up. She also denied using a knife or any other weapon during the incident, police said.

Delgado appeared before 6th District Magistrate Judge David A. Hooste via video conference from the Bannock County Jail for an arraignment hearing Monday where her bond was set at $10,000. Delgado posted the bond Tuesday and was released from jail.

She is scheduled to appear in court again on June 11 for a preliminary hearing. Prosecutors will attempt to present sufficient evidence to elevate the case from magistrate to district court for trial.

If convicted of felony aggravated battery, Delgado faces up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $50,000.

The incident remains under investigation and criminal charges may be forthcoming against the man who was stabbed in the back for his role in the disturbance, police said in the report.
