SHELLEY — A heavily armed man was arrested Wednesday morning near Shelley following an incident that involved him shooting a police vehicle and the SWAT team responding in an armored car, authorities said.

Luke Thomas Herzberger, 27, is being held at the Bingham County Jail in Blackfoot on two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapons enhancement after he was arrested in the front yard of a residence on 1150 East while armed with an AR-15 rifle and a pistol, the Bingham County Sheriff’s Office said.

The incident involving Herzberger began to unfold around 1 a.m. Wednesday when a resident reported a possible burglary of a shop in the area of 1150 East 1300 North.

The resident reported seeing a male running from the area followed by the sound of gunfire, authorities said.

When Bingham County sheriff’s deputies and Shelley police arrived on the scene, they heard several gunshots and a police vehicle was struck by one of the bullets, the Sheriff’s Office said.

“Due to darkness, multiple visual obstructions, and a unique landscape affecting sound travel in the area, it was unknown where the shots were coming from,” the Sheriff’s Office stated.

Idaho State Police, Blackfoot police, Bonneville County sheriff’s deputies as well as the Bonneville County SWAT team with a Bearcat armored car were called in to search for the suspect and protect the many homes in the area.

A thermal drone was deployed and spotted the suspect, identified as Herzberger, running through nearby fields, continuing to fire his weapons, authorities said.

Herzberger was next spotted hiding behind a small silo along 1300 North. When he began running again, he was intercepted by SWAT and other law enforcement officers in the front yard of the home at 1150 East where he was arrested around 2 a.m. Wednesday.

There were no injuries during the incident and no shots were fired by law enforcement.

Herzberger reportedly acted alone in what the Bingham County Sheriff’s Office described as “an isolated incident with no ongoing threat to any residents.”

Authorities said Herzberger is a resident of California but was staying with relatives in the Shelley area.

The Bingham County Sheriff’s Office is thankful that this “shots fired incident of an extended duration” was resolved without anyone being injured.

“We give our deepest appreciation and gratitude to all of the surrounding agencies for being willing to help,” the Sheriff’s Office stated in a Wednesday news release about the incident. “Shots were ringing out with a suspect at large that was unable to be seen, and the heroes of the night stayed in the fight. They tactically advanced towards the sound of gunfire and brought the situation to a peaceful resolution. We could not be more proud and thankful for the outcome.”
