IDAHO FALLS — Emergency crews searching for an out-of-state man who fell into the Snake River Thursday afternoon while viewing the falls near the Broadway Bridge had not located him as of Friday afternoon.

Bonneville County sheriff’s deputies, Idaho Falls police and Idaho Falls Fire Department personnel responded just before 4 p.m. Thursday to reports of a person in the water. The victim, visiting Idaho Falls with a co-worker, slipped on the rocks and fell in while looking at the falls.

Crews deployed water rescue, dive and drone resources to search from above the Broadway Bridge downstream past the Pancheri Bridge into early evening Thursday. High water levels and strong currents prevented divers from safely entering the water, forcing crews to rely on surface, sonar and drone equipment.

Searchers resumed the effort on Friday morning but had not located the man as of Friday afternoon.

Current conditions on the Snake River are dangerous — water levels are extremely high and swift, visibility is limited by floating and submerged debris, and water temperatures are in the low 40s, making self-rescue extremely difficult, according to the Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities are urging anyone near local waterways to use extreme caution. The river is not safe for swimming and conditions are difficult even for experienced boaters.

“Emergencies can happen in the blink of an eye,” the Sheriff’s Office said. “Always consider safety when you are near the water.”
