POCATELLO — A local man has been arrested for beating a woman during an incident that ended when an armed Idaho National Guard officer intervened, authorities said.

The incident began to unfold around 7 p.m. Monday when Pocatello police received multiple calls that a man was beating a woman at the intersection of Pole Line and Eldredge roads on the city’s north side.

When police arrived they reportedly found the suspect, De Von Farmer, 19, of Fort Hall, being held at gunpoint by Iraq war veteran and Idaho National Guard Maj. David Worley of Pocatello, who had been driving by the intersection when he spotted Farmer beating the woman.

Worley pulled over, exited his vehicle and told Farmer to stop attacking the woman.

When Farmer then approached Worley in an aggressive manner, he pulled out a pistol and ordered Farmer to halt, police said.

Farmer, who was unarmed, obeyed and was arrested a short time later when several Pocatello police units arrived on the scene. Police said Worley fully cooperated with them and witnesses corroborated his account of what had happened.

The woman who was kicked and hit by Farmer was treated at the scene by Pocatello Fire Department paramedics but did not suffer any serious injuries and was not transported to the hospital, police said.

Farmer was subsequently booked into Bannock County Jail for misdemeanor domestic battery for beating the woman, police said.

The woman’s name has not been released but police said she is a local resident.

Police said it appears Worley was within his rights to pull out his gun when Farmer aggressively approached him at the intersection.

The incident remains under investigation by Pocatello police.
