CHUBBUCK — The Idaho Coffee Company and its customers recently came together to help raise money for a local 4-year-old boy named David Akins.

Stephanie Akins, David’s mother, said her son is autistic and nonverbal. She said she and her family have been trying to raise money to get him a special bed. They had set up a GoFund Me page, but they still didn’t have enough money.

“We’ve been trying to get him a safety bed,” she said.

Akins said Idaho Coffee Company, 322 E. Chubbuck Road, asked its customers to put money in a jar labeled “Tips for David” for the fundraiser. She said Idaho Coffee Company heard about her son thanks to her in-laws.

“My in-laws are regular customers,” she said. “They asked the owner and she was like ‘Yeah, we’ll do it.’”

Akins said she is grateful for Deidra Terrell, the owner of Idaho Coffee Company, for her support and is thankful for everyone who contributed to the fundraiser.

Akins said she was overjoyed when she found out that Idaho Coffee Company was willing to do this for her son.

“I felt so blessed,” she said. “I cried. I am so grateful.”

Akins said Idaho Coffee Company was able to raise $250 for her son. She said that puts them almost halfway to what they need to be able to afford the safety bed.

“So far we have $950,” she said. “We need $2,000.”
