During the season of Lent, the 40 days leading up to Easter, many different religious activities take place around the world.

Within the Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, founded by Michael McGivney in 1882, is the premier lay Catholic men’s organization.

In Blackfoot, members of the Knights of Columbus who attend St. Bernard’s Church serve a fish fry every other Friday during Lent. They will hold one more event this Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. in the church basement.

Kevin Frost, the Grand Knight of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, sat down with me to help me understand what the Knights do not only locally but worldwide.

They are a global Catholic fraternal service organization with over 1.9 million members. The group focuses on charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism, supporting church and community causes. Kevin states that they also help support young men and mentor them along the way.

For the fish fry hosted by St. Bernard’s, they get the fish from Riverence Fish Farm located in Hagerman. This year, they are serving steelhead along with a choice of baked potato or fries, coleslaw, a drink and a dessert for $13.99. The desserts are homemade by the members’ wives and family members, and they are all delicious.

Although this is a fundraiser for the Knights of Columbus, the funds remain local. They support church members in need and sponsor youth programs to encourage, assist and teach kids the value of service, unity and charity. A child who learns the importance of service and receives guidance to help them in the future is valuable.

St. Bernard’s is a beautiful church that offers many opportunities for worship. They hold daily mass at 8 a.m., a bilingual service on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday service is at 10 a.m., with a Spanish service at 12:30 p.m.
