POCATELLO — Cornerstone Caregiving and Brookdale Chubbuck are set to hold a night of dancing through the decades at a fundraiser for the Bannock County Veterans Memorial Building next month.

The event is called the “Cruisin’ Through the Decades” Veterans Fundraising Ball. It will take place from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m on Saturday, June 7 at Phil Meador Subaru, located at 1437 Yellowstone Avenue.

Marine Corps League representative Bud Smalley said damage to the water-damaged Bannock County Veterans Memorial Building at 300 N. Johnson Ave. on the city’s west side is going to cost $350,000 to repair. Any money raised during this fundraiser would be helpful.

“We are hoping that we can find enough people and businesses in Pocatello to donate $1,000 to help with the restoration,” Smalley said.

The Bannock County Veterans Memorial Association, or BCVMA, has already received $100,000 from an anonymous donation, and will receive $100,000 more if they can raise $100,000 by August. They hope to find 100 people to give them $1,000 so they can reach this goal. This event at Phil Meador Subaru is one of many attempts to raise money for the building.

“Farm Bureau has put out word to their offices across the state to see if any of them can make donations,” Smalley said. “I’ve put in an application with another business. We’re working on several things.”

The building has been part of this community for nearly a century. Smalley said it is about to celebrate a birthday next week. There are several things that need to be updated or repaired.

“It’s going to be 99 years old this Monday, May 26,” Smalley said.

The building has massive amounts of water damage caused by a flood back in December. The leaky foundation caused water to enter the storage rooms, and it will need to be excavated so the cracks can be sealed.

“That doesn’t include several other things,” Smalley said. “We need to repair the elevator. We have problems with the sprinklers outside.”

Smalley asked anyone who is willing to donate $1,000 to the cause. The BCVMA hopes to reach its fundraising goal by Independence Day.

“It’s not easy,” Smalley said. “$100,000 is a lot of money.”

Tickets for the event at Phil Meador Subaru can be purchased at shorturl.at/7vvMM. Tickets are $20 for people ages 55 and older, $30 for people ages 54 and younger, $45 for couples and $200 for a corporate table.
