POCATELLO — Pocatello-based flute choir Suite 212 is presenting its 2024 spring concert 7 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church, 200 N. 15th Ave. in Pocatello. The concert is free and open to all ages.

The choir will perform a wide variety of flute choir pieces to celebrate the spring season. The concert opens with the well known Shaker hymn “Simple Gifts” arranged by Frank Halferty, followed by Georg Philipp Telemann’s “Six Canonic Sonatas for Two Flutes,” Sonata No. 2. Each movement of the sonata is a voice canon in unison in that the follower performs precisely the same melody as the leader. Next to be performed is a favorite of many flutists, ”Tambourin” by François-Joseph Gossec. The piece following, “In the Bleak Midwinter” by Gustav Holst seemed appropriate for this concert during our cold, snowy, winter rehearsals with the hope of the arrival of spring. The sweet, haunting melody debuted as a hymn in the English Hymnal of 1906.

New to the choir “Legends From The Greenwood” by Catherine McMichael, includes two North American legends, “Evangeline and Gabriel,” and “Paul Bunyan And His Blue Ox, Babe.” This will be followed by “Alleluia” by Ralph Manuel, arranged by Victoria Jicha, This piece was originally written as a work for a capella choir by Manuel in 1987.

The choir will conclude the performance with the three-movement piece, “Children Of The Wind” by Catherine McMichael bringing the energy of children, of wind and of the wild land of Wales to the listener. The first movement, Bryn-y-Celyn means Mountain of Holly, and is characteristic of the Snowdon range, well above tree line, and views of the Irish Sea and surrounding peaks and valleys. The second movement, “Moel Fammau” is of a smallish mountain in Mold, Clywd, Wales with a story behind the mountain. The final movement is “Children of the Wind” portraying the image of a tiny girl with a huge black dog by her side, hair being madly tossed by the wind as she bravely trudges up the mountain, a loving portrait by the composer. This piece features piccolo, C flute, alto and bass flute.

The members of Suite 212 are Kathy Albano, Elizabeth Bolinger, Kristina Cochrane, Sarah Jackson, Celia Kampwerth, Jill Kirkham, Kathy Kirkham, Terry Lewis and Charity Staggs.

Suite 212 includes piccolo, C flutes, alto flutes, and bass flute and was started by former Pocatello resident and nationally known flutist and teacher Patricia George in 2001. George was the recipient of a lifetime achievement award from the National Flute Association in 2023.
