New equipment usually means more of the same: another round of dodgeballs, another rack of basketballs. This year, Beutler Middle School decided to try something different.

Beutler Middle School in Dayton, Idaho, was awarded new PE equipment with the help of a $500 grant from Franklin County Medical Center. With the grant money, they received lacrosse equipment, a sport that wasn't familiar to the students.

"It's popular at bigger schools, but at Westside, nobody's played it," said Coby Crozier, Beutler Middle School's PE teacher. "It was fun doing it because everybody was pretty bad at it when we first started."

Equipment can be pricey, and some schools struggle to provide adequate gear for their kids.

"There's a lot of schools [that] don't have any funding for PE," Crozier said. "It's just really nice that Franklin County was able to help us get some stuff."

Crozier has been part of the Dayton community for a while, graduating from Westside High School in 2014, and wants to do what he can for the community.

After coaching in Wyoming and Utah, he returned to Dayton to coach and teach PE. His goal is to make PE fun for everyone.

By adding lacrosse, he's branching out from the four or five sports most PE teachers typically stick to, showcasing a new sport for kids to try.

"PE teachers, they love to do their four or five core games," he said. "The really athletic kids, they love that stuff. I really like unique games. I change it up a lot so that everybody has a chance to thrive and really enjoy coming to PE."

It started with a $500 grant. For a gym full of kids who'd never touched a lacrosse stick, it turned into something bigger, and Crozier knows exactly who to thank for that.

"I'm just thankful that I'm in a community that supports our education department and wants us to be better," he said.
