IDAHO FALLS — A motorcyclist suffered minor injuries Saturday afternoon when struck by an Idaho Falls Police Department cruiser on Lomax Street, authorities said.

According to Sgt. Bryan Lovell, Bonneville County sheriff’s spokesman, the police officer driving the patrol vehicle was stopped at the South Lee Avenue stop sign and apparently did not see the oncoming motorcycle on Lomax Street.

The officer proceeded to drive forward, and the motorcyclist intentionally laid his bike down on the asphalt and slid toward the patrol vehicle to soften the impact, Lovell said. The rider was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries, authorities said.

The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office investigated the collision and forwarded its report to the Bonneville County prosecutor.

The Idaho Falls police officer failed to yield the right-of-way to the motorcyclist, Lovell said.

“Most likely it will result in a failure to yield citation for the officer,” Lovell said.

Lovell said the crash highlights the requirement to obey all traffic laws and watch out for motorcycles because they can be harder to spot.

The names of the police officer and motorcyclist involved in the crash haven’t been released.
