LOGAN, Utah — After a late game rally, the Boise State football team’s Mountain West title hopes comes down to computers.

Dylan Riley’s six-yard touchdown with a little more than two minutes left put Boise State ahead, and the Broncos held on for a 25-24 win against Utah State on Friday.

“I’m just glad we all rallied together as a full team didn’t flinch and just went out there and did our thing,” said Boise State safety Ty Benefield, who finished with seven tackles. “We conquered all that adversity, so it was a great feeling.”

Boise State (8-4, 6-2 Mountain West) keeps its hopes alive for a third straight Mountain West title, but New Mexico’s 23-17 double overtime win against San Diego State kept the Broncos from clinching a spot in the title game, instead forcing a three-way tie for first in the Mountain West between the Broncos, Aztecs and Lobos, with UNLV potentially joining the group with a win against Nevada on Saturday.

A composite of four computer polls will determine the two teams that play next Friday.

“I believe in this team,” said Boise State coach Spencer Danielson. “At the end of the day, Boise State’s the back-to-back Mountain West champions. We lost two games and there’s a lot that we can learn and grow from that. But this team’s absolutely deserving of playing in the championship game.”

It looked dicey at times for the Broncos as two overturned interceptions — which caused a 21-point swing — and the inability to finish drives put the Broncos in a hole. But the Broncos remained level and never let the game get completely away from them.

“I don’t think we. Needed to dig super deep,” said Boise State quarterback Max Cutforth, who threw for 325 yards and two touchdowns in his third career start. “We just kind of played football the way we’ve been playing and they just ended up giving us some of the looks we’ve been looking for. So we were able to take a shot.”

The two interceptions came in the first half, including one on the first drive of the game. Boise State appeared to take an early lead when Jeremiah Earby intercepted a pass by Utah State quarterback Bryson Barnes and returned it 80 yards for the score.

But Earby was flagged for pass interference, wiping the interception, and touchdown, off the board.

Two plays later, Barnes ran in for a 1-yard touchdown on a keeper.

Boise State had another interception overturned late in the first half with a Ty Benefield interception being called off on a targeting penalty on Boise State defensive end Max Stege. Stege was ejected on the call, which was upheld after the review.

Miles Davis ran for an 11-yard score, giving Utah State a 21-10 lead.

Boise State coach Spencer Danielson showed displeasure on the sidelines to both of the calls.

“I got to be really careful how I probably talk about those, but those are tough plays,” Danielson said. “Obviously we’ll look at the film and I think the world of the Mountain West officials and who they are and what they do, but those are huge plays in the game. And those are game changers.

The Broncos didn’t do themselves many favors when they had the ball at times, either. The Broncos got good field position with a Jayden Virgin-Morgan fumble recovery at the Utah State 23, but had to settle for a 27-yard Colton Boomer field goal. A 4th-and-2 Max Cutforth pass attempt from the Aggies’ 14 was dropped by Chris Marshall. Another drive that got down to the Aggies’ 26 ended when a 43-yard field goal attempt by Boomer went wide right.

But despite their offensive struggles, Boise State remained in the game in the fourth quarter thanks to two touchdown passes by Cutforth, an 11-yard screen pass to Matt Wagner in the first half, and a 66-yard pass to Quinton Brown, which saw Brown dive to the pylon as Utah State defenders closed in on him.

Trailing 24-19, Boise State got a big fourth down stop on the first play of the fourth quarter, with Derek Ganter and Roman Caywood combining for a tackle of Barnes on fourth down in the red zone giving Boise State the ball. The Broncos got down to the Utah State 38 and had to punt.

Another drive into Utah State territory ended with a Sire Gaines fumble at the 22, but Utah State gave Boise State one more chance with Virgin-Morgan and Braxton Fely combining for a fourth down stop, giving the Broncos the ball at the Utah State 41. This time, Boise State took advantage with Riley running it in with 2:26 left on the clock.

“We were talking the whole game that we got to finish in the end zone with seven points,” Cutforth said. “It was really good to get down there, our defense did a great job giving us the ball back and it was just looking at those guys right in the eyes and saying ‘this is it right now, we got to put it in the end zone for seven points.’”

Utah State was able to get the ball down to the Boise State 29 on a 32-yard pass, but time ran out, keeping the Aggies from being able to attempt a potential game winning field goal.

The computer polls will be released Sunday. If Boise State faces San Diego State, the game will be in San Diego. If they face UNLV or New Mexico, it will be at Albertsons Stadium.
